Chimney Draft Problems: When Smoke Comes Into the Room

A fireplace that worked fine for years and suddenly fills the room with smoke is not being moody. Something changed, and the list of possible causes is shorter than you think.

Draft is just warm air rising, but several everyday things can break it. Run through these in order before assuming the chimney itself failed.

1

The cold flue

A flue full of cold air is heavy and resists the first smoke of the evening. This is the most common cause of startup smoke and the easiest to fix: warm the flue with a rolled newspaper torch for a minute before lighting the main fire.

2

The house is fighting the chimney

Dryers, range hoods, and bathroom fans all pull air out of the house. In a tight triple-decker, they can pull harder than the chimney, dragging smoke back down. If smoke appears when the dryer runs, you have found it. Crack a nearby window and test again.

3

A blocked or narrowed flue

Creosote buildup, a bird nest, or fallen debris narrows the flue until it cannot carry the smoke. If the problem built up gradually over a season, this is the likely cause, and it needs a sweep, not troubleshooting.

4

The cap or the wind

A missing or damaged cap lets wind push straight down the flue. Downdrafts that come and go with the weather point here. Coastal Quincy gets plenty of wind off the water, so this one is common near the shore.

5

The damper is not fully open

It sounds obvious because it happens constantly: the damper was left half-closed after cleaning or by a previous tenant. Check it first every time. If it is rusted stuck, that is its own repair.

What to do tonight

Try the window test: open a window near the fireplace and light a small fire. If the smoke problem disappears, the house was starving the chimney of air. If it persists, stop using the fireplace and call (857) 220-8629; a blocked flue is not a wait-and-see problem.
